After the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, her son Charles will be crowned as the King, and his wife Camilla Shand, the Duchess of Cornwall, will be the Queen Consort.
Earlier the late queen decided to give the title of princess consort to Camilla, but this year in February, she reverted her previous decision and decided to give the title of queen consort to her daughter-in-law after the queen’s demise.
The male spouses of the queens used to get the title of prince consort and not of king consort.
Let us have a look at how the title of queen consort differs from that of a queen.
The Queen Consort vs. The Queen:
There is a difference between the roles of the queen consort and of the queen in terms of rights.
Queen consort is a symbolic role that is given to the female companion of the king. The companion can be his wife or partner. This role symbolizes her support for the king, but she has no formal ruling rights. In contrast, the title of the queen is a formal one and gives the person all the rights to rule. Queen means the title holder is the ruler herself and not merely a support to the king.
How Camilla got the title of Queen Consort?
Although Charles was married to Diana, he was having an affair with Camilla, who was also married. Andrew Parker Bowles, an army officer, was the husband of Camilla.
Camilla and Andrew took divorce in 1995, whereas Charles and Diana got separated in 1996. But even after their divorce, Diana held the title of Princess of Wales. She died at the young age of 36 in a car accident.
In 2005, Charles and Camilla got married. Late Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the marriage but hosted the reception ceremony for the couple. She announced that Camilla would be the princess and not the queen. This announcement was quite unusual as Camilla was originally entitled to the queen consort’s title.
And later on, in February 2022, during the celebrations of 70 years of rule, the late queen announced that Camilla would be queen consort after Charles became the king.
Will Camilla be called the queen or the queen consort?
According to Dr. Cindy McCreery, who is the historian of the royal family, queen consort is the name of the title and is a formal term, but Camilla will be referred to as queen.
He cited the example of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s parents. Her father was the king, and her mother was the queen consort. But we all know her by the name Queen Elizabeth, and she was never called Queen Consort Elizabeth.
