The release of ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ and its Box Office Collections:
Mani Ratnam’s epic ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ is making waves at the box office. The movie has crossed Rs 250 crore mark worldwide.
As the festive week is approaching, the Vikram & Aishwarya Starrer is expected to make new records in box office collections.
‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, the Tamil-language movie, was released on the 30th of September. And on the opening day, its box office collections were $9.8 million. It was the biggest all-time opening day record for any Tamil movie.
It has been released in five languages – Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
It had also been released in the IMAX format across the US, the UK, India, and Singapore. The movie is making great earnings in this format as well.
“#PonniyinSelvan had one of the BEST Mondays in Kollywood with a double digit figure at the TN BO,” trade analyst Manobala Vijaybalan tweeted.
‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ and the Story behind it:
The ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ movie has been made in the Tamil language. It has been directed by the famous director Mani Ratnam and written by the late Kalki Krishnamurthy.
The story was earlier published in the Kalki magazine between 1950 and 1954 in an episodic manner. In 1955, five novels were published on the story.
The story of the movie is about the Chola empire that ruled southern parts of India and Sri Lanka in the 10th century. The empire was going through tough times and the ruling family was facing the power struggle among the family members. It led to the chances of civil war.
In 1994 and 2011, Mani Ratnam tried to make ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ but things could not work out.
This time the makers have divided the movie into two parts. ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ is the first part which ends on a cliffhanger. The shooting for the second part is over and is all set to release in 2023.
‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ has power-packed performances from the actors like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bacchan, Jayam Ravi, Prakash Raj, etc.
