International Yoga Day 2022: The practice of yoga originated in India centuries ago and God Shiva is considered to be the originator of yoga. He transferred his Yoga knowledge to the ‘Seven Sages’ called ‘Saptarishis.’ It is believed that those Saptarishis traveled to the various parts of the world to spread the knowledge and awareness about Yoga.

In his United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) address in 2014, the Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, told the importance of yoga and proposed the date of 21st June to celebrate International Yoga Day. The date was suggested by him since it has a special significance in most parts of the world and is also the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The resolution proposed by Mr. Modi was endorsed by 177 out of 193 UN member countries, which is the highest ever vote for any such a resolution.

Since its inception in UNGA in 2014, International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on the 21st of June. 

The first yoga day was celebrated on 21st June 2015 and it was a huge success. A Guinness World Record was also set on this day as the official celebration by the Indian government became the largest yoga gathering ever of people as well as of various nationalities.

  • Hydrate yourself well before performing the Yoga.
  • For better results, start doing Yoga on an empty stomach.
  • While doing Yoga asanas, wear light and comfortable outfits as the body should be able to move very easily.
  • After completing the Yoga routine for the day, calm yourself down by performing relaxation techniques.
  • Practice Yoga regularly and persistently.
  • Yoga asanas should always be performed on a Yoga mat that has a good grip.
  • When you are unwell, avoid performing Yoga.
  • Yoga should not be performed right after having meals. One must wait at least a minimum of 2 to 3 hours after the meal.

  • Start with simple asanas and slowly move towards the tougher ones as your body may not be ready for sudden stress.
  • Always perform yoga in an open space like a rooftop, park, etc.
  • Arrange for new yoga supplies like a mat, water bottle, toe socks, etc.
  • Meditate and calm yourself down while doing yoga.
  • You can also join a yoga trainer or studio if it is not easy for you to carry on yourself.
  • Subscribe to various YouTube channels for yoga help and tutorials.
  • Take part in various yoga events every year on yoga day.
