The famous US ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson went missing from Nepal’s Manaslu mountain on Tuesday. She lost her balance during skiing and tumbled off the mountain.
Unfortunately, on the same day, a Nepali mountain climber and guide lost his life on the same mountain in an avalanche accident. This was the first casualty of this season. Several other climbers suffered injuries. They were airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu.
Nepal has eight out of the world’s fourteen highest mountain peaks. This is the peak season for climbing expeditions. 49-year-old Hilaree Nelson was in Nepal to take part in an expedition organized by Shangri-La Nepal Trek. This year Nepal government issued mountain climbing permits to 504 climbers. And the highest number of permits were issued for Mount Manaslu.
She was skiing down from the height of 26,775 feet. Her partner Jim Morrison was also with her. All of a sudden, she tumbled off the mountain. And after that, she could not be located.
Earlier, they both successfully reached the summit of Mount Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world. After completing their target, they were coming down while skiing.
The rescue teams are looking for the missing Hilaree Nelson, but the rescue operations got obstructed by bad weather conditions on Monday. However, conditions improved on Tuesday, and the visibility got better. The rescue team sent a helicopter to have a look at the mountain top conditions and see any signs of Hilaree.

Hilaree Nelson and her partner Jim Morrison are experienced ski mountaineers. In 2018, they reached the top of Mount Lhotse, which is the 4th highest peak in the world.
In 2012, Hilaree became the 1st woman to conquer Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
