Comcast has shut down its video gaming channel G4 TV. The decision was taken within one year of its relaunch.
Comcast tried its best to revive the channel but could not attract viewers.
The Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO, Dave Scott, informed the G4 employees in a memo that was circulated on Sunday.
The following e-mail was sent to the employees by Dave Scott:
As you know, G4 was re-introduced last year to tap into the popularity of gaming. We invested to create the new G4 as an online and TV destination for fans to be entertained, be inspired, and connect with gaming content.
Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial results. This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.
I know this is disappointing news, and I’m disappointed, too. I want to thank you and everyone on the G4 team for the hard work and commitment to the network.
Our human resources team is reaching out to you to provide you with support, discuss other opportunities that may be available, and answer any questions you may have.
Thank you again for all of your hard work for G4.
Chairman and CEO
Due to this decision, forty-five employees at G4 have lost their jobs with immediate effect. Among these employees, there are also contract workers.
The representatives of Comcast have said that the employees will be assisted by the company to get new jobs and it is also possible that some may get internal opportunities.
The Comcast G4 TV channel started in 2002 but ceased to operate in 2014 as it was not able to get viewers. The owners tried their luck for the second time in November 2021 and the channel was relaunched. But luck did not go their way and then again they had to pull the plug and close G4 TV.
The ratings of the G4 TV channel were almost dead. The average number of viewers who watched the channel was just 1000. The channel owners were not able to gain any financial results.
Comcast G4 TV channel is not the only one to feel the heat. Several media and tech ventures related to gaming have gone down recently. A Facebook gaming app, Google gaming service Stadia, etc. are among them.
Spectacor’s main business focus is on sports and live events. So the shutting down of G4 TV is not going to impact its revenues much.
