She was living in her apartment in Manhattan. Here she took her last breath on Wednesday. Mary Alice died due to natural causes.
In 1987, she received the esteemed Tony award for Best Actress category. She got this award for acting in the play titled ‘Fences.’ The play also went on to win Pulitzer Prize. Mary won an Emmy award in 1993 for her role in the movie ‘I’ll Fly Away.’ She received this award in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category.
The actress Gloria Foster played the role of The Oracle in the first two movies of The Matrix series. But she died in 2001. After her death, Mary was chosen to portray the same role, and she did complete justice to it.
In the year 2000, Mary became part of the American Theatre Hall of Fame.
Mary Alice was born in Indianola, Mississippi, in 1936. She had four siblings. She was brought up in Chicago. Her father was a laundry worker, while her mother was a factory worker.
After completing her college studies, she became a Social Security secretary, and then she became a teacher at an elementary school.
Before being a part of the movie industry, Mary started working in plays at theatres. She joined a community theatre group. She got her first remuneration as a theatre actress in 1966. In 1967, Mary came to New York to adopt acting as her full-time career. In 1979, she bagged the Obie Award for her performance in Julius Caesar.
She made her debut in movies in 1974 with the movie ‘The Education of Sonny Carson.’ Even though she started working in the film industry, her love for theatres remained alive, and she continued her theatrical work alongside.
She also appeared in certain television shows like ‘Police Woman,’ ‘Sanford and Son,’ etc.
She took retirement from acting in 2005. The veteran actress’s last on-screen appearance was in the ‘Kojak’ serial episode. The episode was aired in 2005.
