Abby Steiner breaks NCAA 200m record in 4x400m relay leg

Abby Steiner, the Kentucky junior, set the college record in the 200m as well as the fastest time in the world when she ran at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Hayward Field.

She clocked 21.80 seconds and battered Favour Ofili’s NCAA record of 21.96 which was set this year. Ofili came second behind Steiner.

Steiner also overtook Olympic silver medalist Christine Mboma, timing 21.87 seconds, and became the 2022 world leader.

Steiner ran a 48.92 split during her 4x400m leg and went from 4th position to the 1st as Kentucky won the relay. Here you can check her Instagram profile.

Steiner missed Olympic Trials last year because of an Achilles injury. This year she is going to the USATF Outdoor Championships in two weeks. It is hoped that the three-woman 200m team for the world championships will be prepared by July. Both meets are going to take place in Eugene.

Texas’ Julien Alfred won the 100m race finishing in 11.014 seconds.

With 54 points, Florida claimed the women’s team title, a day after when the Gators claimed the men’s championship. Florida’s women also won the title of the NCAA indoor team.

Talitha Diggs, a Gators sophomore and daughter of 4-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs, won the 400m and clocked a personal best of 49.99 seconds.

Kristie Schoffield of BYU also ran a personal-best of 2:01.09 in the 800m race. She postponed the television interview and went to hug her mother in the stands.

Sintayehu Vissa, Ole Miss sophomore, won the 1500m race in 4:09.42. Courtney Wayment of BYU took a big lead and ultimately won the steeplechase in 9:16 flat, which is a new college and meet record.

Alia Armstrong of LSU won the 100m hurdles in 12.57 seconds, whereas Britton Wilson of Arkansas claimed the 400m hurdles title in 53.86 seconds.

Katelyn Tuohy of North Carolina State defended her title in the 5000m race which she won in 15:18.39.

Texas won the 4x100m relay race in 42.42.
