Piano Competition Van Cliburn: 18-year-old pianist from South Korea has won one of the top showcases organized for the world’s best pianists, the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition

The competition was held in Fort Worth Texas. It ended on Saturday night with Yunchan Lim from South Korea becoming the youngest pianist to win the competition and get the gold medal. He also won a cash award of $100,000 along with 3 years of career management. 

31-year-old Anna Geniushene from Russia and 28-year-old Dmytro Choni from Ukraine became the silver and bronze medallists respectively.

Lim said that even after winning the competition he still feels like a student and wants to learn more. He also said that he will discuss with his teacher his next move for his career. 

The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was founded in the year 1962 in the honor of Van Cliburn, the celebrated pianist. He lived in Fort Worth. Cliburn, and died in 2013 at the age of 78. During his lifetime, he played for the U.S. presidents, royalties, and heads of state all across the world. 

Van is best remembered for winning the 1st International Tchaikovsky Competition which was held in Moscow in 1958 when the Cold War was at its height. 

The competition is traditionally held after every 4 years. This year’s competition was earlier scheduled for last year but could not be held due to the pandemic and was postponed.
